Sports massage for neck and shoulder pain

5 min read

In short

Neck and shoulder pain often comes from hours at a desk, stress and shallow breathing, which leave the upper traps, neck and muscles between the shoulder blades tight. Sports massage releases that tension and restores movement, and pairs well with small changes to how you sit, move and breathe through the day.

You do not have to be an athlete to carry a lot of tension. Some of the tightest shoulders I treat belong to people who sit at a desk all day, and it is one of the most common reasons people come to see me.

Why the tension builds

When you spend hours at a screen, your head drifts forward, your shoulders round, and a handful of muscles end up holding that position all day:

  • The upper trapezius, from your neck to the top of your shoulders
  • The muscles between your shoulder blades
  • The neck itself, which works hard to hold your head up

Add stress and shallow, chest-based breathing on top, and those muscles rarely get a chance to switch off. Over time that shows up as stiffness, headaches that start at the base of the skull, and a limited, achy range of movement.

How sports massage helps

A focused treatment works into those overworked muscles to release the tension, ease the associated headaches and restore how freely you can turn and look around. Many people notice a difference straight away, and feel like they can move their neck properly again.

It is targeted work, not just a rub of the shoulders. We find the areas actually causing the problem and treat those.

What helps between sessions

Massage gives you a reset. These small habits help it last:

  • Move often. Stand, roll your shoulders and look away from the screen every half hour or so.
  • Raise your screen so the top of it is roughly at eye level.
  • Breathe low. A few slow breaths into your belly, not your chest, several times a day.

When to get it checked

If you have numbness, pins and needles down your arm, or pain after a fall or accident, see your GP before booking massage so anything more serious can be ruled out. I will always tell you honestly if I think that is the right first step.
